ILRI seeks to recruit a Community Health Worker to work within the project, People, Animals and Their Zoonoses (PAZ) which is based in Kenya’s Busia District, which sits on the country’s western border, with Uganda.

Responsibilities
  • Represent the project with residents in the study area, and maintain good relations with participating study subjects;
  • Assist the project clinical officer in undertaking clinical examinations of adults and children participating in the study and record clinical and questionnaire findings in electronic forms, according to project protocols;
  • Take responsibility for labeling and securing samples taken from study subjects according to project protocols;
  • Deliver samples to the laboratory staff at the project’s regional laboratory and process them according to project protocols for analysis (under the direction of senior project staff)
  • Maintain records of the homes and animals visited using a digital data input device
  • Take care of the project resources;
  • Any other duties that may be assigned by the senior project staff;
  • Willingness to spend sometimes long days in the field (returning daily to the central laboratory).
Skills and Qualifications
  • Certificate or Diploma in Community Health and Development (or equivalent;
  • Minimum 1 year (preferably at least 2 years) of field experience in community-based studies;
  • Ability to work well in a multidisciplinary team;
  • Ability to maintain good relations with the participating study subjects;
  • Possess a valid driver’s license (preferable, but not required);
  • Skilled at field preparation of blood and faecal samples for laboratory processing;
  • Skilled at maintaining accurate records, including undertaking questionnaire-based surveys
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision;
  • Willingness to learn new field techniques where appropriate and conform to project protocols;
  • Excellent communication skills and good command of English
  • Fluency in any of the following: Bukusu, Teso, Luhya, Samia or Dholuo
  • Some previous experience of working in a laboratory is desirable;
  • Previous use of GPS for field mapping is desirable.

  • At least two years of field experience working with Community-based health studies

  • Ability to undertake clinical diagnoses of a range of diseases based on discussions with the study subjects and physical examinations;
  • Skilled at maintaining accurate records, including undertaking questionnaire-based surveys
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision;
  • Willingness to learn new field techniques where appropriate and conform to project protocols;
  • Excellent communication skills;
  • Excellent command of English;

Volunteer Technical Assistants in Networking and Advocacy

Background

The Non State Actors Support Programme: NSA-NET is a democratic governance programme implemented by the Ministry of Justice, National Cohesion and Constitutional Affairs (MoJNCCA) with financing from the 9th European Development Fund of the European Union.

The Programme aims to strengthen mechanisms, networks and capacity for deepening and broadening of NSAs (including cultural actors) involvement in development processes.

To support Networking among and Policy Influencing by NSAs, the NSA-NET Programme is seeking to engage four (4) Volunteer Technical Assistants to be based in Nairobi, Rift Valley (Eldoret), North Eastern (Wajir) and Nyanza(Kisumu).

The Volunteer Technical Assistants will support the enhancement of effective communication, information sharing and horizontal learning (effective networking) as well as spearhead policy influencing and advocacy initiatives among the NSAs and cultural actors in their respective regions.

The selected Volunteer Technical Assistants will be contracted for a non-extension period of 12 months.

Academic Qualifications
  • Minimum of University Degree in Social Sciences, Political Science, Economics, Communication, Development Studies or their equivalent.
General Experience
  • At least three (3) years experience working in development projects;
  • Well organized and good organisational skills;
  • Excellent computer skills (familiar with windows, excel, power point, Internet);
  • Experience in facilitating meetings and workshops; and
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team.
Professional Experience
  • One year experience in working in programmes related to networking and policy advocacy; and
  • Strong skills in interpersonal and inter-institutional communication.
Language Requirements
  • Excellent spoken and written English and Kiswahili.

Students' Competition - A call to Secondary School, College and University Students to Participate in a Logo Drawing Competition

The Ministry of Justice, National Cohesion and Constitutional Affairs (MoJNCCA) with support from the European Union (ninth European Development Fund) is implementing a Programme known as Non State Actors Support Programme: NSA-NET.

The NSA-NET is a democratic governance programme and specifically seeks to strengthen mechanisms, networks and capacity for deepening and broadening the participation of Non State Actors (NSAs) in development processes.

The NSAs funded through the NSA-NET Programme include non-governmental organizations (NGOs), civil society organizations (CSOs), and cultural actors. The NSAs are supported to implement diverse governance initiatives across the country.

The areas of focus include: youth, women and community empowerment and participation; participation of Kenyans with disability in governance and development issues; promotion of national cohesion; improving access to justice; enhancing accountability and protection of human rights; use of art and cultural actors in promoting good governance, and reflection and action on issues of ethnicity and national identity.

The Programme intends to develop an appropriate "LOGO" that it will use in all its official documents. To promote participation of Kenyan youth and to provide them with an opportunity to innovatively translate their ideas of good governance into art, the Programme is launching a competition among students under the following rules:

Rules of Competition:
  1. The participants are invited to create an original LOGO. In doing so, the participants should be guided by the theme: "NSAs can achieve better results of promoting good governance if they network (or work together) with a common purpose".
  2. The drawing must be produced on one side of a plain A4 size sheet.
  3. The participant must indicate in the back of the sheet the following details (Full names, address and telephone contact; name and address of School/College/University being attended; Class or year of study).
  4. A jury composed of a team drawn from the NSA-NET Programme Management and Facilitation Unit (PMFU), European Union and selected funded NSAs will select 3 winners from among Secondary Schools' participants and 3 from among College/ University participants.
  5. Prizes of Kshs. 25,000, Kshs. 30,000 and Kshs. 40,000 will be offered respectively to the third, runners-up and winner of the secondary schools participants.
  6. Prizes of Kshs. 35,000, Kshs. 40,000 and Kshs. 50,000 will be offered respectively to the third, runners-up and winner of the College/University participants.
  7. All prizes will be made as follows: Kshs. 10,000 will be paid directly to each winner and the balance in form of fees/tuition payments in account of the winner to their respective institutions.
  8. Any of the winning drawings will be used to develop the NSA-NET Programme Logo.
  9. The participants understand that the copyright of all the submitted drawings will be retained by the NSA-NET Support Programme. The participants not have right of return.
  10. The NSA-NET Support Programme cannot be held responsible for force majeure, should the competition have to be modified or cancelled.
  11. Submission of an entry assumes the acceptance of all competition conditions by the participants. No appeal on the organization or on the results of the competition will be accepted. The decision of the jury will be final.

Project Counselor

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Spearhead the provision of counseling services to street children and youths within the project.
  • Participate in Identification, Documentation Tracing and Reunification (IDTR) process for reformed children.

  • Support the implementation of all direct activities within the institution with a special emphasis on counseling, referring street children for services and reintegration.

Requirements and Qualifications:

  • Experience in counseling children in difficult circumstances is an added advantage

The Productive Assets Recovery and Institutional Strengthening (PARIS) project is an ongoing 3 year project that is funded by EC. The project is facilitating rural communities in Gogrial East, South Sudan recover from the effects of the 20 years of war through provision of support to their livelihood systems mainly agriculture, livestock production and enterprise development.

The project has a strong component of building local institutions as one way of enhancing sustainable community development.

Job Purpose:

To manage the microfinance sector of the project and be responsible for planning and execution of the sectoral project activities to fit coherently with other sector activities, World Concern Sudan Country strategy and the overall organizational goals, and achieve desired goals and objectives.

Summary of Main Responsibilities:
  • Provide overall leadership and direct the successful implementation of PARIS Microfinance sector and roll out project activities within the project area as well as initiate sustainable economic activities that empower communities in focus;
  • Ensure quality, focus and feasibility in the implementation, monitoring and evaluation of PARIS Microfinance sector interventions in target communities;
  • Ensure that the project interventions are designed and developed in conformity with World Concern ministry priorities and industry accepted norms and standards in community-based microfinance programming model;
  • Actively engage with grass root communities to understand their needs and ensure project activities make the greatest impact among the beneficiaries served
  • Identify and/or develop required project tools and methodological approaches, and provide technical assistance and training/capacity building to ensure project interventions achieve or surpass established objectives;
  • Provide effective leadership to project staff and enhance a learning culture - based upon evidenced based best practices and industry standards - to enable project staff achieve established targets and standards;
  • Impart appropriate mentoring, coaching and supervision among community resource persons in order to equip, motivate and empower them for program sustainability
  • Ensure full compliance with project donor’s requirement in accordance with the project contract.
  • Collaborate with other local development players and actors seeking and maximizing opportunities for synergy creation and efficiency in our programming.

KickStart is an award-winning, nonprofit, social enterprise with a unique solution for fighting poverty in Africa. We design and mass-market simple, money making tools that poor entrepreneurs buy and use to create highly profitable businesses.

KickStart’s best selling devices are their human powered, MoneyMaker irrigation pumps. These low cost pumps are sold in local retail shops and enable farmers to move from subsistence to commercial irrigated farming.

The farmers grow high value crops throughout the year, increase their net annual incomes by over $900 and lift their families out of poverty. Over 105,000 farmers in Africa are already using these pumps and 1700 more are buying these pumps every month.

We’re currently developing a new pump that will lift water from deeper than our current pumps. To finalize design and properly assess the market opportunity, we are looking for more data on the water levels & well depths in high potential regions of Kenya.

Therefore, we are seeking an independent, personable, analytical, and detail-oriented individual to help us gather shallow well water level data in the field.

Principle Accountabilities:

This person, over 3.5 months (starting in mid-April), will be responsible for the following:
  • Building a comprehensive work plan working with the Product Management, Engineering, and Impact Monitoring team to map out the locations where they will randomly sample well-depths, water levels, and measure diameters of wells
  • Developing a database of accumulated data including mapping out the data that we have already collected around areas where our pumps have been sold
  • Physically traveling to farms, liaising with farmers, and measuring depths of water in the field/on farms across areas of Kenya
  • Data transfer via text messages on details of findings everyday: including GPS coordinates, water levels, diameters, and general farm information
  • Sorting through the collected data using Google Maps or Crowdmap and ensuring the data is mapped correctly
  • Working with a GIS specialist to help organize and analyze the data to help us drive recommendations for our new pump on areas of market entry, average well-depths, and farmer feedback on viability of our new pump
Necessary Skills and Experiences
  • Must be fluent in Kiswahili and English
  • Must be able to travel on the road independently for 3+ months via bus and on motorcycles
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills –doesn’t shy away from asking people questions and a great communicator/prober
  • High attention to detail – a copious note taker who doesn’t miss a beat; great at organizing information and compiling reports

Your responsibilities will include working with the country team, the PR team, engineering and product teams, and the rest of the EMEA marketing team to drive projects such as executing marketing campaigns, determining ROI on advertising expenditures and developing collateral that optimally positions the strengths of our products. As we are creating unique custom products for this region, you will work closely with the product and Engineering team, providing them insights and market intelligence as part of the product development process.
Africa is a strategic region for Google and as such PMM Kenya may also have additional, pan regional responsibilities in East African and in Sub Saharan Africa as a whole. These responsibilities will include executing strategic product launches. You will have to be creative and innovate, working on the basis of experiences gained on other emerging markets, while giving our marketing campaigns a unique African flavor, to assure they are best to fit the needs of the region.

Responsibilities:

  • Execute Google's marketing plans primarily focusing on small business, working closely with the Google product, sales and PR team.
  • Work with partners and SMBs to create a self sustaining environment for businesses coming online.
  • Contribute to the the monitoring of consumer, industry and competitive behavior and provide local market expertise to the Google team.
  • Evaluate consumer marketing opportunities and initiate programmes to increase awareness of Google products through development of creative programmes, brand awareness campaigns and promotions.

Requirements:

  • BA/BS degree preferred, MBA a plus.

The role: Communications Manager, East Africa

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with all communications activities for Google in East Africa (Kenya, Uganda, possibly Tanzania and Rwanda)
